Pass it along!

This Simple Avocado Smoothie (known in Brazil asvitamina de abacate) is mixed with sweetened condensed milk to result in a refreshing, simple drink packed with nutrients. And all you need is four ingredients.

Avocado Smoothie Recipe

If you’ve ever heard of an avocado smoothie, you might wonder what goes into a smoothie made with this fruit that is often dressed up in savory dishes. How do you make it sweet? Or make it even taste good? Well, you’re about to find out…

What is an Avocado Shake Made of?

There are about as many versions of avocado smoothies as there are food blogs in the world. Run a brief Google search, and you will find Vietnamese versions, vegan versions, and milkshakes. Typically, however, most of these recipes have these ingredients in common:

  • avocado (of course!)
  • a sweetener (maple syrup, banana, dates, honey, sweetened condensed milk–or any blend of these)
  • a dairy product (milk, ice cream, coconut milk, almond milk)
  • ice

Avocado Smoothie with Condensed Milk

An avocado smoothie with sweetened condensed milk is classic Brazilian. (Is there any truly authentic Brazilian dessert that doesn’t boast its fair share of condensed milk?) These smoothies gain extra sweetness and creaminess from the flavors that the sweetened condensed milk lends. While not as healthful as some other ingredient choices, sweetened condensed milk is a highly effective sweetener.

Avocado Smoothie Recipe Ingredients

  • Avocado (either whole, fresh avocado or avocado puree–both are acceptable and make no discernible difference)
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice–This gives the smoothie its extra-refreshing quality.
  • Sweetened condensed milk–Balance the flavor of avocado with something sweet.
  • Whole milk–This isn’t a place to skimp and use skim milk. Embrace the rich thickness of an avocado smoothie and go all the way with whole milk.

How to Make an Avocado Smoothie with Sweetened Condensed Milk

To make a delicious avocado smoothie with condensed milk, follow this simple two-step process:

  1. Blend all ingredients together in a blender until the mixture is smooth and has small bubbles and no ice chunks remain.
  2. If additional sweetening is required, add sugar or more sweetened condensed milk to taste.

Can You Make an Avocado Smoothie Ahead of Time?

While it is possible to blend up an avocado smoothie awhile before you will serve it, the texture of the drink will change. For optimal results, I recommend storing the smoothie in the refrigerator and then blending it with a few more ice cubes immediately before serving.

What Country Are Avocado Smoothies From?

Interestingly, several countries around the world seem to have “authentic” avocado smoothies. Vietnam, Thailand, and Brazil all have their own versions of this delicious drink. If you travel to Vietnam, be sure to try Sinh To Bo. In Thailand, sa-moo-tie avocado. In Brazil, vitamina de abacate.

How Do Brazilians Take Vitamins?

Have you taken your vitamins yet today?

Does the mention of that word just make you gag?

If you were Brazilian, it probably wouldn’t.

In Brazil, vitamina can have an entirely different connotation than you might think when you compare it to the English cognate “vitamin.” To my Brazilian husband, vitamina connotes a delicious, sweet smoothie.

Essentially, vitamina is a mother’s way of giving her children their daily vitamin intake in smoothie form–lightly sweetened, fruit-based goodness.

My husband, Leandro, has fond memories of his Brazilian mãe blending up bananas and milk for him and his brothers when they would play a soccer match. The calcium, potassium, and protein in the drink were exactly what they needed for their exercise.

There are multiple versions of vitamina, with different fruit bases. You can try simple bananas or papaya or mango. My favorite by far, however, is the recipe here for avocado vitamina (vitamina de abacate).

Does Sweet Avocado Taste Bad?

Frankly, a Brazilian avocado smoothie might not appeal to you at first. (Sweet avocado–what?!?!) But, believe me, it is delicious!

Many Brazilians think savory avocado dishes (e.g., guacamole) are just as odd as American think avocados with sugar are.

Give avocado with sugar a chance. (After all, besides guacamole, it is one of the most delicious ways to consume this superfood.)

Simple Avocado Smoothie with Sweetened Condensed Milk

Yield: 2 servings
Prep Time: 2 minutes

This Simple Avocado Smoothie (known in Brazil as vitamina de abacate) is mixed with sweetened condensed milk to result in a refreshing, simple drink packed with nutrients. And all you need is four ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup avocado puree or one small avocado
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 4 Tbsp. sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes or crushed ice

Instructions

  1. Pour all of the ingredients into a blender. (I recommend pouring the sweetened condensed milk in last, as it will likely stick to the blender blade otherwise.)
  2. Blend until smooth and no chunks of ice remain.
  3. Taste test. If you prefer additional sweetener, add sweetened condensed milk (a tablespoon at a time) or granulated sugar until you reach your desired sweetness.
  4. Serve immediately.

Notes

If you wish to prepare this smoothie in advance, follow the recipe but omit the ice. Refrigerate until just before serving. Blend with the ice and serve immediately.
